Dropsonde

New Dropsonde for meteorological investigations

Within a consortium leaded by Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe enviscope is currently developing a new cutting edge dropsonde system for high flying aircraft.

The new dropsonde will improve meteorological investigations that require a high spatial resolution over the vertical range up to 55.000 ft. Funding for the new system is provided by DFG and Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe.

Currently a new launching technique is in the prototype phase. A series of test launches at low altitudes has already been performed. Further test launches from jet aircraft will follow with the aim to have the first deployment of the new dropsonde system ready by the upcoming HALO demonstration mission NEPTUN in 2010.
