AERO-TRAM wins award in competition “Germany – Land of Ideas”

The idea of our partner and contractor KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) to regularly measure air quality in urban areas on top of a tramway has been awarded in the german wide competition “Deutschland – Land der Ideen”. The project AERO-TRAM was one of 365 selected landmarks in the “Land of Ideas” in the year 2011.

We are glad that we have been able to realize this great idea on behalf of the KIT – Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research and to meet the technical challenges within this project. Please visit our AERO-TRAM page for more details.

Volcanic Ash meets DENCHAR IFCC

On May 25, just in the beginning of the DENCHAR In-Flight Intercomparison Campaign (DENCHAR IFCC), volcanic ash from the eruption of Grimsvötn influenced the Airspace of Germany.

On behalf of the German Weather Service (DWD) enviscope performed a measuring flight in the Northern Part of Germany using the Learjet 35A D-CGFD. The aircraft was equipped with a set of instruments provided by the DENCHAR partners and an installation designed by enviscope for surveillance tasks of the German Weather Service.

During the flight no critical ash concentrations were detected and no indications were found to continue the partial blocking of the airspace.

Airborne Survey of Radioactivity

On behalf of the German Weather Service (DWD) enviscope performed measuring flights to control the radioactivity in the upper atmosphere after the accidental release at Fukushima. The flights were performed using a special mission Learjet 35A of our partner GFD.

The first measurements were performed on March, 23 flying between the North Sea and the Alpes and along the coastal line. In heights between 15.000 and 30.000 ft no enhanced values of airborne radionuclides could be measured. The flight track is given below.

On March, 30 two additional flights took place. This time enhanced values of Iodine-131 have been detected.
The sampled gas probes as well as the aerosol probes collected on filters using a ‘High Volume Sampler’ have been analyzed in laboratories of the German Weather Service.

From October 25^th to October 31^st 2010 enviscope joined the

International Conference on Airborne Research for the Environment (ICARE)

in Toulouse.

During the Airborne Research Exhibition with more than 10 participating research aircraft and 60 stands for research funding institutions, operators, experts and SMEs instrumentation, enviscope presented its activities in the field of atmopsheric research and the poster shown below.

This year our Santa Claus got trapped between bundles of paper when he realized that he needs proper logistics for the distribution of the gifts, including the development and certification of QA/QC processes. enviscope had similar demands in 2010, e.g. during the RECONCILE campaign, within the IAGOS project, and for all the HALO and FALCON certification work.

HALO_SR certified for HALO

The scientific experiment HALO_SR “Spectral Radiances” has been flown aboard the first HALO mission with operational scientific instruments. The instrumental set-up has been certified within our co-operation with the Design Organisation Gomolzig Flugzeug und Maschinenbau GmbH (GFM). This experiment is a a joint development of Universities of Mainz and Leipzig, and Research Center Jülich.

Successful flight tests

DLR has finished the first set of test flights with the Trace Gas Inlet (TGI) installed on HALO. The TGI was developed, manufactured and delivered by enviscope. The whole test flight envelope up to the maximum airspeed of mach 0.885 has been tested.

The flight tests are one important step towards the final certification driven by the DLR design office. enviscope contributed with the documentation and substantiation of the inlet assembly, including the modified aperture plate.

SMART-HELIOS delivered

SMART-HELIOS is a newly developed instrument for measuring spectral radiative properties of clouds. It was built by enviscope GmbH on behalf of and in co-operation with the Leipzig Institute for Meteorology (LIM) and the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (IfT).

SMART-HELIOS is designed to be operated below a helicopter and in combination with the “Airborne Cloud Turbulence Observation System” ACTOS. It is gimbal-mounted (20 m below the helicopter) and fixed within the rope carrying ACTOS .

The instrument measures radiances and irradiances for the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges above the clouds by means of two optical inlets an four spectrometers, while ACTOS simultaneously measures 150 m below the microphysics and turbulence parameters of the same part of the cloud.
