On behalf of the German Weather Service (DWD) enviscope performed measuring flights to control the radioactivity in the upper atmosphere after the accidental release at Fukushima. The flights were performed using a special mission Learjet 35A of our partner GFD.
The first measurements were performed on March, 23 2011 flying between the North Sea and the Alpes and along the coastal line. In heights between 15.000 and 30.000 ft no enhanced values of airborne radionuclides could be measured. The flight track is given below.
On March, 30 two additional flights took place. This time enhanced values of Iodine-131 have been detected.
The sampled gas probes as well as the aerosol probes collected on filters using a ‚High Volume Sampler‘ have been analyzed in laboratories of the German Weather Service.
Some of the results are published on the web-site of DWD.
